Allen & Overy’s presence in the construction and real estate sectors in Thailand stems primarily from its connections with local and international banks and the firm’s strong project finance practice, which is led by partner Stephen Jaggs. The firm’s international network means that the Bangkok office is often seen advising international financial institutions on their investments into domestic Thai and regional projects.

In one deal highlight, Jaggs led a projects team advising the International Finance Corporation on a 73-megawatt solar power project to be built in Thailand. The team also recently advised the Kansai Electric Power Company, EGAT International and LHSE Holdings on the English and Thai law aspects of the financing and development of the 282-megawatt Nam Ngiep 1 Hydropower 1 Project.

However, because the firm is equally well known in the domestic market, it is also frequently instructed by domestic companies seeking first-class counsel. In 2011, the Bakers team advised a syndicate of lenders in extending US$220 million and Baht 15.4 billion for the development, financing, design, construction and operation of the hydrogen peroxide to propylene oxide (HPPO) plant. The plant is to be operated by Siam Cement and Dow Chemical subsidiary MTP HPPO Manufacturing and, on completion, is set to become Southeast Asia’s largest hydrogen peroxide to propylene oxide (HPPO) plant.

Senior consultant Tim Dobson joined the team in 2011, and brings a depth of corporate experience in real estate-related matters to the group. The growing team boasts an impressive list of clients including Hilton, Hyatt, Starwood, Marriott, Dusit Thani, La Tour Indochine and ResortCom Elite.

DLA Piper’s team continues to advise key client Tesco Lotus (via Ek-Chai Distribution System Company) on an array of domestic real estate-related matters, especially when it comes to new project development and existing properties.
