Baker & McKenzie’s tax practice is able to draw on the resources of the firm’s worldwide offices to give clients multi-jurisdictional advice. The tax practice, led by partner Michael Wong, provided legal and tax advice to Chi-Mei Optoelectronics in connection with the largest M&A deal in the high-tech sector.

Another notable transaction saw the firm advise a multinational bank focused on wealth management tax consultation on issues relating to offshore trust arrangement, and discretionary and life interest trust. This complex case required implementation of the much vaunted Alternative Minimum Tax.

To end the year, the firm provided tax advice to Morgan Stanley, as financial adviser to Polaris, regarding financial group Yuanta’s acquisition of Polaris.

Another transaction saw the team advising an international pharmaceutical manufacturer in a tax dispute regarding expenses incurred for the sponsorship of doctors’ participation in overseas medical conferences.
