From January 2009, Alban Tay Mahtani & de Silva entered into a global alliance with UK firm Bird & Bird, further strengthening its already impeccable IP credentials. The firm offers expertise in a strong suite of IP skills, with a strong regional anti-piracy practice, trade mark work, IP litigation and patent applications. The team has been busy with a number of cases before the courts. One before the Court of Appeal saw the firm successfully represent client Aman Resorts in gaining recognition that Aman trade marks were well-known.

Another case before the Court of Appeal saw ATMD Bird & Bird successfully represent Hyundai Mobis against Exxon Mobil’s challenge to the trade mark application of Hyundai Mobis. One pending case sees the firm representing Hoya Corporation in a patent litigation in Singapore against Asahi Glass Company. Sheena Jacob is head of the firm’s department, and she is able to call on the considerable talents of one of the key patent law practitioners in Singapore Alban Kang. Other talents include Ang Kai Hisang and Karol Goh.

Drew & Napier has a distinguished IP practice that is one of the largest in Singapore. The firm offers a comprehensive service in trade marks and service marks, copyright and designs, patents and IP litigation. Recent work has seen the firm represent the company Love & Co in its suit against The Carat Club. The firm successfully argued in the High Court to invalidate the ‘love’ trade mark previously registered in Singapore by the latter for its products.

One of Singapore’s largest telecoms providers SingTel mandated the firm on a trade mark infringement matter against Taiwanese company Mitac International Corporation. Mitac alleged that SingTel used ‘mio’ trade marks similar to its own, but Drew & Napier was successful in having the case dismissed. French bistro and bakery chain Delifrance also used the firm’s services in an action started in Indonesia to remove the registration of the ‘Delifrance’ trade mark by an Indonesian citizen.

Morris John is the firm’s managing director, and also heads the IP team. He is one of the leading patent practitioners in Singapore. Fellow directors Dedar Singh Gill and Tony Yeo are other standout names practicing at the firm.

Another matter that has gone before the Court of Appeal saw the firm representing Mobil Petroleum Company in an opposition against the ‘Mobis’ trade mark filed by Hyundai Mobis. Advance Magazine Publishers used the firm in its successful case against Ozone Community Corporation regarding application of the mark ‘hysteric glamour’.
