Dr Huang received J.D. and Engineering Ph.D. education from Stanford University. He moved to China from Silicon Valley in 1993 and was the attorney in charge of IP & IT law practice at Baker & McKenzie and O’Melveny & Meyers in Beijing before co-founding East IP with Dr Lulin Gao. In addition to private practice, he assisted Dr Gao, who was the commissioner of the Chinese Patent Office for 11 years, in establishing China’s State Intellectual Property Office in 1998 as its founding commissioner. Dr Huang during his 17-year China practice, has handled many landmark IP cases, including winning Viagra patent lawsuits, enforcing IP rights against Huawei, obtaining well-known trademark recognition for Google and Yahoo! and successfully defending Seagate in the first patent troll case in China. He has been voted one of the leading IP lawyers by in-house counsels surveyed by Asialaw magazine for years. Besides managing and growing East IP into a firm with more than 150 members, Dr Huang co-founded Yahoo! Internet Law Center and is a director of the Law School IP Institute at Peking University.
