This is reportedly one of the largest placements of 2011, and the transaction represented 15% of the client’s share capital.

A notable matter was its representation of Gardline Marine Sciences in its acquisition of Asian Geos, a leading offshore geotechnical contractor. The deal was valued at over US$20 million and completed in March 2011. “The firm offers admirable service at reasonable prices,” adds another client. “The lawyers have great legal knowledge.”

The dispute resolution practice at the firm is particularly strong, with another competitor saying: “The firm is probably best known for its litigation and disputes work as this is where it established its name.” Name partner Low Siew Cheang is regarded as a “prominent and iconic lawyer” by the market. The firm sits on many domestic banks panels, with a considerable presence in banking litigation. Its range of work includes disputes regarding company law and securities law.

Cheang & Ariff’s IP practice has deep experience with trade marks in Malaysia. The team, led by partner Cindy Goh, is praised by clients for its “quality and professional staff and people”. A continuing matter is the firm’s representation of Kawasaki Heavy Industries in opposition work against a trade mark registration by a Taiwanese company.
