SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan is a globally-oriented, full service firm. It is the largest law firm in the Philippines, with its principal office in Makati City, the financial and business center of Metropolitan Manila, and branch offices in Cebu, Davao and the Subic Bay Freeport. Although the firm’s practice centers on business activities, it has, since its founding in 1945, offered a broad and integrated range of legal services that cover such areas as family relations, constitutional issues and other matters of law unrelated to commerce.
The firm achieves perennial recognition as the leading Philippine law firm. In 2010, the firm was adjudged the Philippine law firm of the year at the Asian Legal Business Southeast Asia Law Awards, the first-ever Chambers Asia Awards for Excellence and the International Financial Law Review Asia Awards, and by Who’s Who Legal (the Strategic Research Partner of the ABA Section of International Law). Notably, SyCip has received such recognition from the IFLR nine times since the year 2000, and from Who’s Who Legal every year since the awards’ inception in 2006.
The firm’s practice is diversified, as reflected in its seven principal departments: banking, finance and securities, corporate services, intellectual property, labor, immigration, litigation, special projects, and tax. Within this structure, some of the firm’s lawyers are involved in additional fields of specialization, such as immigration, shipping and maritime law. Four of the firm’s partners have been admitted to the New York Bar.
The firm has a wide and varied international law practice in the Philippines. It maintains links with established and leading firms in major cities in Asia, Europe, Canada, the United States, Central and South America, Australia and New Zealand. The firm is also a member of the Pacific Rim Advisory Council, Multinational Association of Independent Law Firms, World Law Group, World Services Group, and The Interlex Group.
The managing partner of SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan is Rafael A Morales, who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the firm. The general policies of the firm and other matters not requiring partnership action are left to an executive committee.
The firm recruits on an annual basis from the leading Philippine law schools and has adopted a growth policy consistent with the increasing requirements of its clientele. Its attorneys are assisted by full-time non-legal professionals, including certified public accountants, chemists and patent agents, and other paralegals. The firm maintains a full complement of library, accounting, docket, records and other administrative personnel.
